Memories of The Corner House

Carol Lawson writes:

The Corner House - closedThe Corner House opened in 1937. I first remember visiting it in the 1970’s after watching York City play. I was only a kid then and off sales of pop and crisps were available from the side door. Later I used to visit to play darts against them and there was always a good welcome. We used to go after work at the weekends and it was always very busy.

In the 1980’s we used to watch local bands there such as “Watch with Mother” and “You Slosh”. I remember dancing on the seats at these gigs as there was little room to move.

On Sunday evenings there used to be a man who played a keyboard and we would get up on stage and sing. I suppose it was an early version of karaoke. There was also a successful Corner House football team and there was a coach outside on Saturdays waiting to take them to their match. In 1987 they won the Tour of Ibiza.

It was a place for friends to meet and an elderly friend of mine who moved to Bridlington used to come all the way back to have a pint there and was always made welcome as if he had never moved away.

St Luke's regulars with the Corner House teamSteve Pryce took over for a few weeks and ended up staying for four years. During his time he made the pub a family friendly place in the heart of the community with children’s parties and some interesting fundraising events such as fire walking in 2012. In 2013 Steve received a community pride award from The York Press for “service with a smile”.

It was noted that he had “turned the business around and turned it into a friendly and welcoming place”. He held a quiz night on Thursday evenings and St Luke’s church fielded a team known by the regulars as the “God Squad”. We all enjoyed the good natured banter.

In the final weeks I watched Michael Jackson in October and the last show which was Elvis “Andy” Wood. The Corner House has been a big part of my life on Burton Stone Lane and it will be greatly missed.
